Początkowo ich rozmowa zdaje się być zabawą w uwodzenie, jednak stopniowo przekształca się w niebezpieczną grę. Coraz bardziej zirytowany niechcianym towarzystwem Jeremiasz nie jest w stanie uwolnić się od natrętnej współpasażerki. Dziewczyna z minuty na minutę pcha architekta w coraz bardziej mroczną pułapkę. A przecież wszystko zaczęło się tak niewinnie…
W czasach, w których bezustannie wystawiamy się sami na pokaz, chciałem przy pomocy „Wroga doskonałego” porozmawiać o potworach, które ukrywamy w szafach. O grzechach, które próbujemy schować przed innymi i przed samymi sobą. O winach, które zamiatamy pod dywan w nadziei, że nikt ich nie odkryje.

Poniżej znajdziecie wywiad z Tomaszem Kotem, który opowiada nieco o samym filmie:
„Wróg doskonały” to intensywne i dynamiczne spotkanie dwóch silnych osobowości. Jakie cechy uwypuklił pan w granym przez siebie Jeremiaszu, żeby taki właśnie był?
Reżyser filmu Kike Maillo chciał pokazać faceta, którego świat jest perfekcyjnie poukładany, a który nagle spotyka kogoś, kto mu go totalnie demoluje. Mieliśmy sporo czasu na przygotowanie do wejścia na plan w Barcelonie, całe trzy tygodnie, w czasie których wygospodarowaliśmy też przestrzeń na długie i owocne rozmowy. O dziwo, całkiem sporo ludzi pytało mnie, jak się żyło w komunizmie. Ta historia Polski wciąż jest bardzo żywa. Wydaje mi się jednak, że to co wszystkich interesowało najbardziej, to doświadczenie emigranta, przybysza z dalekiego kraju, który wyrywa się spod jakiegoś reżimu i rusza na zachód. Kike był pod wrażeniem tych różnych pytań i historii, które opowiadałem, wśród nich też tę Pawła Pawlikowskiego. W końcu Kike postanowił dołożyć trochę więcej informacji do postaci Jeremiasza, czyniąc go właśnie jednym z tych Polaków, którzy opuścili swoją ojczyznę w poszukiwaniu lepszego życia. Jak wielu innych bohaterów, także Jeremiasz musiał pracować dziesięć razy ciężej, żeby się utrzymać, potwierdzić swoją wartość i przede wszystkim pracować w zawodzie. W trakcie tego całego okresu przygotowawczego powstała więc klarowna i spójna historia pochodzenia Jeremiasza, którego do nowego życia przygotował grający mojego mentora znakomity francuski aktor Dominique Pinon.
Najwięcej gra pan scen z młodą obiecującą aktorką Atheną Strates, do tego to przecież sceny bardzo mocne i wymagające.
Poza wiekiem i pochodzeniem różni nas wiele, ale współpraca układała się naprawdę świetnie. Byliśmy nastawieni na to, że zrobimy wszystko, aby film nam się pięknie udał. Dla Atheny to pierwsza tak duża rola, dla mnie pierwszy tak duży projekt międzynarodowy, oboje w pewnym stopniu byliśmy więc debiutantami. Spędziliśmy razem sporo czasu. Athena jest z Cape Town, na planie było też sporo Hiszpanów i Argentyńczyków, a kręciliśmy pewną część w zimie. Dla mnie cudownym czasem były jeszcze jasne zimowe wieczory, kiedy termometr pokazywał wciąż cudowne 16 czy 17 stopni. Wtedy ja z rozpiętą kurtką siadałem w przyhotelowej kawiarni napawając się widokiem ze świadomością, że w Polsce jest już ciemno i mróz, po czym przychodziła zziębnięta Athena i ze śmiechem przypominała, że u niej w domu jest teraz 40 stopni! Z mojej perspektywy to prawdziwie fantastyczne doświadczenie, które udowadnia też dobitnie, że świat się kurczy, i zmniejszają dystanse.
Jak to się stało, że Kike Maillo w ogóle do pana trafił z tym scenariuszem?
Wydaje mi się, że to „Zimna wojna” była takim moim międzynarodowym biletem. Dostałem po niej wiele propozycji ze świata, włącznie z filmem o Tesli. Kiedy padła propozycja filmu biograficznego, to mając w swojej filmografii obrazy o Zbigniewie Relidze i Ryszardzie Riedlu sądziłem, że mam wręcz papiery na to, by grać takie postaci. Akurat tamten film na razie nie powstaje, ale Kike na mnie zaczekał. W związku z tym, że język angielski jest dla mnie drugim językiem, zazwyczaj dość długo czytam scenariusze zagraniczne, które dostaję. To zajmuje kilka dni, wiąże się z licznymi konsultacjami, bo przecież obce teksty są zwykle naszpikowane idiomami i frazami, które brzmią po polsku zupełnie inaczej. Natomiast tekst „Wroga doskonałego” przeczytałem w parę godzin, niezwykle mnie wciągnął. Cały czas zastanawiałem się, o co chodzi, co się zaraz wydarzy. Na kartkach czuło się wręcz tę dynamikę i intensywność. Kiedy wreszcie po lekturze zdzwoniliśmy się z Kike, usłyszałem, że strasznie podobała mu się „Zimna wojna” i że zdecydowanie potrzebuje na planie kogoś takiego jak ja. Kogoś, kto łączy w sobie mrok i szlachetność i jakąś taką nieoczekiwaną moc. Nie mogłem odmówić (śmiech).
Nie miał pan wcześniej w karierze zbyt wielu okazji, by wypróbować tę swoją szlachetność i mrok jednocześnie, bo i takich soczystych thrillerów w pana filmografii nie ma zbyt wiele. Jak pan wspomina całe to doświadczenie?
To prawda, nie miałem wcześniej za często do czynienia z rasowym thrillerem, może nawet nigdy. Od początku do końca byłem tym jednak zachwycony. Jasne, że się trochę bałem, szczególnie że tak naprawdę po raz pierwszy byłem jedynym Polakiem na planie. Nawet przy okazji poprzedniej mojej międzynarodowej produkcji dla BBC – „World on Fire” byliśmy dość sporą reprezentacją Polaków. Z kolei przy „Warning” ponieważ kręciliśmy w Polsce, duża część ekipy pochodziła z naszego kraju. Przy „Wrogu doskonałym” nie było natomiast żadnego telefonu do przyjaciela. Grając główną rolę człowiek cały czas jest przecież przed kamerą. Dla mnie to był bardzo duży i poważny sprawdzian umiejętności, bo można było polegać tylko na sobie i na tym, czego się do tej pory nauczyłem, czego doświadczyłem. Na szczęście Kike jest bardzo sprawnym i efektywnym reżyserem, który ma wszystko w małym palcu, pięknie wyliczone i zmierzone, pod kontrolą. Nie kręciliśmy co prawda chronologicznie, ponieważ byliśmy związani lokacjami, ale pracowaliśmy bardzo ciężko podczas prób i kiedy się wreszcie znaleźliśmy na planie, to wszystko zaprocentowało.
Określił pan Kike Maillo jako bardzo efektywnego reżysera. O polskich aktorach za granicą też często mówi się, że są bardzo efektywni, potrafią do maksimum wycisnąć każdy dzień zdjęciowy. To w takim razie chyba stworzyliście z reżyserem „Wroga doskonałego” – duet doskonały?
Niedawno nawet myślałem o tej naszej polskiej aktorskiej efektywności, a pierwszy zwrócił mi na to uwagę reżyser mojego odcinka „World on Fire”, z którym się zakolegowałem. Powiedział wtedy, że chociaż przy serialu ze względu na jego specyfikę, pracował z wieloma narodami, to zwrócił uwagę, że Polacy są zawsze najlepiej obeznani z planem. Wyszło nam chyba wtedy, że to dlatego, że my zwykle działamy na mikrobudżetach, w porównaniu do produkcji ze Stanów czy Wielkiej Brytanii. Wtedy wiedza na temat tego, kto gdzie stoi, gdzie ustawić kamerę, żeby nie zasłaniała światła, albo dokąd absolutnie nie można iść, żeby niczego nie poruszyć, jest po prostu kluczowa i niezbędna, żeby nie przedłużać żadnego dnia zdjęciowego. Ekipa była więc pod sporym wrażeniem naszych zdolności.
Ma pan już dzięki tym zagranicznym projektom spore doświadczenie międzynarodowe, ogromne na planie rodzimych produkcji. Nie da się więc uniknąć porównań!
Technicznie to w zasadzie nawet to samo, ale ze względu na rozmach niektórych produkcji byłem zmuszony do rezygnacji z części moich przyzwyczajeń. Zazwyczaj lubię się witać z członkami ekipy, z którymi danego dnia współpracuję, ale na planie dużych produkcji to jest niestety niemożliwe. Z kolei przy okazji „World on Fire” ćwiczyliśmy na poligonie i ktoś nam pokazywał kilkanaście rodzajów sztucznej amunicji stworzonej tylko po to, żeby można ją było wykorzystać w filmie. Tego rodzaju przygotowanie wygląda za granicą zupełnie inaczej niż u nas. Ale ja byłem bardzo szczęśliwy, bo przy każdej zagranicznej produkcji miałem czas i okazję się dobrze przygotować. Zawsze robiłem to i tak przy każdym swoim projekcie, choć zwykle na własną rękę. Tu mieliśmy odpowiednie środki i ludzi, żeby zapewnić całej ekipie to, czego potrzebowała.
Wspomniał pan wcześniej o kwestii językowej jako sporym wyzwaniu, ale czy spotkał się pan jeszcze z czymś na planie „Wroga…”, co zapamięta pan na długo?
Z pewnością wiele. W tej chwili przychodzi mi jednak na myśl szczególnie scena w cemencie, którą realizowaliśmy przez całe dwa dni zdjęciowe. Pewnego dnia przyjechałem na plan i zwróciłem uwagę, że wygląda po prostu jak plac budowy. Na środku stała wielka gruszka, ale nie zdążyłem nawet nikogo o nią zapytać, kiedy podszedł do mnie producent i powiedział: „Tomasz, this is for you!”. Okazało się, że w środku znajdowało się mnóstwo ziemniaczanego puree, mąki i barwników spożywczych, które miały imitować cement. Do tej sceny potrzebny był udział dwojga dublerów, Atheny Strates, Marty Nieto, hiszpańskiej aktorki, która w filmie gra moją żonę i mój. Nie miałem pojęcia, co się wydarzy, i jak mnie w tym udawanym cemencie zatopią. Nie muszę też chyba dodawać, że było w nim przerażająco zimno, bo nie było jak go ogrzać! Słowem: niezapomniane przeżycia!
Musi mi pan jeszcze koniecznie opowiedzieć o wnętrzach, lokalizacjach, tym wielkim, choć trochę klaustrofobicznym lotnisku, które zbudował pana Jeremiasz!
Co to była za przygoda! (śmiech) Udało nam się wygospodarować jeden dzień zdjęciowy na autentycznym lotnisku, do tego jednym z największych na świecie, bo na lotnisku imienia De Gaulle’a w Paryżu. Już po jednym dniu miałem wrażenie, jakbym tkwił tam od 2 miesięcy! Spotkało nas tam wiele nieoczekiwanych sytuacji. Ponieważ nie graliśmy wśród statystów, tylko prawdziwych pasażerów, obserwujących nagrywanie poszczególnych scen, niektórzy mnie poznali jako aktora „Zimnej wojny”, inni nie zdawali sobie sprawy, że kręcimy. Kiedy trzykrotnie musiałem szybko wstać z miejsca i przebiec kawałek, razem ze mną podnosiła się spora grupka gapiów patrząc się, za czym ja tak biegnę tyle razy! (śmiech) Musieliśmy wiele razy prosić, żeby nikt nie reagował, bo nawet gdy nie widać kamery, ona rejestruje ujęcia. Poza tym oczywiście mieliśmy na De Gaulle’u swojego lotniskowego opiekuna, który prowadził nas niedostępnymi dla pasażerów korytarzami, ponieważ nie mieliśmy standardowych biletów upoważniających do lotu i znajdowania się w tej części hali. Nie mogłem wyjść z szoku, kiedy postanowiłem wrócić do Polski w czasie przerwy w zdjęciach, i wracałem dokładnie z tego samego stanowiska, przy którym kręciliśmy nasze sceny! Znałem tam już w okolicy każdego, od obsługi naziemnej, przez kelnerów aż do pracowników punktu informacyjnego. Natomiast kiedy nasz czas w prawdziwej lokalizacji się skończył, wynieśliśmy się z Paryża do miejscowości Reus w Katalonii, gdzie scenograf przerobił ogromną salę konferencyjną na poczekalnię dla pasażerów biznesowych, która stanowiła przez pewien czas nasz główny plan. To właśnie tam znajdowało się lotnisko zaprojektowane przez Jeremiasza. Niezapomniane przeżycia, niezapomniane doświadczenie!
