NASA i SpaceX rozbiją satelitę o asteroidę w przyszłym tygodniu

Mając nadzieję, że zapobiegnie to powtórzeniu się tego, przez co wyginęły dinozaury, NASA i SpaceX planują bezpośrednie zderzenie satelity z asteroidą.
Już 23 listopada obie agencje kosmiczne wystrzelą rakietę SpaceX Falcon 9 w ramach testu Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), który polega na „celowym rozbiciu statku kosmicznego DART o asteroidę, aby sprawdzić, czy jest to skuteczny sposób zmiany kursu, jeśli w przyszłości zostanie odkryta asteroida zagrażająca Ziemi”.

Asteroida, która będzie celem całej akcji, jest typem binarnym z dwoma ciałami nazwanymi Didymos. Didymos A ma około 780 metrów szerokości i orbituje wokół niego Didymos B, który sam mierzy około 160 metrów średnicy. Obie asteroidy mają ominąć naszą planetę w 2022 roku i po ponownym okrążeniu powrócić w 2024 roku. Dla osób o słabych nerwach – w żadnym wypadku bliźniacze asteroidy nie znajdują się na kursie kolizyjnym z Ziemią. Jednak NASA i SpaceX uważają, że ta asteroida byłaby dobrą próbką do testów. NASA do tej pory zidentyfikowała 23 różne obiekty, które potencjalnie mogą uderzyć w Ziemię w ciągu następnego stulecia, dlatego przygotowanie się na te wydarzenia będzie kluczowe.
